Photography Classes
Eye of the Photographer
This is an eight week class designed to help emerging photo enthusiasts compose great pictures. The class will help you understand your camera as well as use it to create strong images that go beyond "the postcard picture", according to class instructor Steven L. Miller.
As Miller explains, "I have taught this class for years in the Washington, DC area. Students always leave with a new tool kit for recording events and people important to them. Most importantly, we have a good time exploring the difference between an average image and one that will last a lifetime."
This class has been CANCELLED due to a conflict in the instructor's schedule.
Photography For Life
This class will explore the power of the photo essay in telling the story of a person, place or event. Ideal for students who have taken the Eye of the Photographer class, or who have some shooting experience, the class will retrace the history of documentary photography as
showcased by magazines from Life to the National Geographic.
Class participants will review what constitutes a strong image and how images work together to convey emotion. How to prepare for a shoot will also be covered, including the concept of story boarding to insure you get the shots you want. Focus will also be given to how and when to direct subjects. Finally, attention will be given to editing for impact and selection of outlets for your work.
The class is taught by Steven L. Miller, a Washington DC based photographer with nine images in The Smithsonian's permanent collection and is limited to 5 students.
About the Class
Participants should have one or two themes they would like to explore, such as photographing an event, person, community or overall theme. Themes and/or essay ideas will be shot between the 2nd & 4th weeks of class.
Students should plan on shooting 20-40 images a week during those weeks and come to each class with at least ten0 4x6 size prints. Both film and digital cameras can be used.
Please bring samples of your work to the first class.
Prerequisites
Students who attend this class should have either taken the "Eye of the Photographer" class or have an intermediate level of shooting experience.
Note: All costs associated with the final application of the work are the responsibility of each student.
