Mostly self taught, Steve Elliott has studied with Eo Omwake and Mitch Lyons. His preferred (mixed) media are clay monotype, gouache and watercolor, and oil. He is a member of the Chester County Art Association.
"I want my work to make a visual impression that, like a parable or a joke, cannot be explained without reducing its impact, so I prefer not to offer extended explanations. I will say that it has been especially influenced by Richard Diebenkorn and Don Clausen and that for me it explores – and celebrates – the tension between chaos and order, between chance and intent."
His process requires many steps. Briefly, a ground is prepared by applying, directly or by transfer, colored slips of clay and ink onto a leather-hard slab of clay. Pastels may also be applied to the slab and colored clay inlaid into it. Moistened fabric is pressed onto the slab to transfer the colored clay to the fabric, forming the ground. Brush and palette knife are used to paint, wash, and glaze oil, gouache and/or watercolor onto the ground to create the finished image.
Some of Steve's work is displayed below.
