Richard was born in Delaware County and grew up in Lansdowne, PA. He attended art school at the Hussian School of Art in Philadelphia and began his art career as a commercial artist at a Philadelphia design company in 1969. After freelancing for a few years illustrating children’s books, Rick took a job as an art director at a small agency in Chester County. There, he experienced his baptism by fire into the commercial world and began to develop his watercolor style. When his first solo show in 1976 sold out, it provided the springboard for him to switch from commercial arts to fine arts. Bollinger began to devote his time and talent to his painting.
People remember Bollinger paintings. When a Bollinger original or reproduction hangs in your home or office, it’s surprising how often people will look at it….and ask you about it. Perhaps it’s the dramatic color, or the magnificent skill in composing a scene. Perhaps it’s his talent for taking you back in time. Richard Bollinger has an incredible gift for capturing the spirit of early America — in a way that also captures people’s hearts.
"Much of my work is bolder now than it was in the ‘70s and ‘80s when I began. Now, my palette includes far more than just color. I use light and shadows and water and emotion to help create an image that has far more dimension and meaning to people.”
Few painters come close to the success Bollinger has already experienced. His talent has catapulted his work past the boundaries of the Chester County tradition into national prominence. Today his work hangs in homes and galleries across America, and in some of the most prominent collections around the world.
