Philip Lang lives in Unionville, Pennsylvania and began painting in the watercolor medium while living on the central coast of California. After relocating to his home state of Pennsylvania 15 years ago, he continued his art and found enjoyment painting the unique personality of the Chester County landscape. Since the Philip’s work takes him to different areas of country, he uses the opportunity to paint at those locations as well.
Philip first began working in the pastel medium due to the relative ease of painting outdoors and transporting materials in light of restrictions associated with air travel. Through working in this medium, he found the properties of pastel, along with recent advancements in support materials (pure pigment mechanically bonded to archival papers) favorable to his method of mixing colors on the painting surface.
Philip continues to paint in both watercolor and pastel mediums and especially enjoys the challenge of plein air landscape painting. He also likes to capture indoor scenes, still life and has recently experimented in abstract painting. Commissioned works have been undertaken on occasion.
While living in California, Lang studied with the late Arthur Renshaw (schooled in post WWII New York), and has painted in the southeastern United States in a workshop with Susan Sarback (Founder of the School of Light and Color in Fair Oaks, California).
