These wonderful bowls are hand-sculpted from native
American hardwood trees.
The craft of hewing wooden bowls from a single piece of log is an art
and talent brought to Early America by our ancestors from Scotland and
Europe. Each bowl, sculpted with attention to quality and detail, is
created with a respect for nature and the time it takes for a 120-year-old
black walnut tree to grow to maturity.
The hewn bowl is distinctly
crafted using 18th century-style hand tools and is strikingly different
from the more familiar lathe-turned bowl. The subtle hand-tooled texture
is a defining characteristic of these classic bowls.
The process is extremely labor-intensive
and, working at the pace of the wood, takes 4-8 weeks to complete. Whether
displayed or used daily at the dining table, the patina of the wood
gains a richness over time and often
becomes a treasured family heirloom.
