Dennis Young returned to the art world after a long hiatus while working in healthcare, which he continues to do. In the early 1970s he had done some plein air painting and exhibited in outdoor art fairs. In 2007, Dennis was ready to resume his earlier interest in art and took a community watercolor workshop. He then returned to oil painting and converted an attic into a dedicated studio. While he spends some time painting there, especially the figure or scenes inspired from his travel photos, he gravitates towards plein air. Dennis is largely self-taught although he has benefited from workshops with artists such as Scott Prior, Kim English, Nancy Tankersley and Jeremy Lipking.
Artist Statement
I have always been attracted to realist art and now especially with an influence from the impressionists, I sometimes try to make a painting "pop" by tweaking colors and exaggerating tonal differences. An old brick wall or stretch of field accentuated with strong lights and darks will snap my senses to attention with a newfound emotional connection to what was only mundane just before. I do enjoy oil painting in the studio but my pastels so easily lend themselves to the spontaneity and brilliance of plein air painting. It's almost as if I am sculpting a colorful representation of that nook of nature as it presents to me. My collection of paintings is emotionally loaded with recollections and impressions of places visited, people engaged and nature absorbed.
